This article explains Australia’s 100-point identity verification system and how Snug uses it to verify member identities for security purposes.
Overview of the 100 Point Check
The 100-point check is Australia’s standard method for proving identity, primarily used to combat financial transaction fraud. Snug utilises this system to verify member identities, enhancing security for both renters and property managers.
The system requires individuals to provide documents that collectively reach at least 100 points. This must include one Primary Document.
Document Categories and Points
Primary Documents (50 Points)
You must provide one of the following:
- A driver's license issued by an Australian State or Territory
- Current passport
- Photo ID Card
Secondary Documents (40 Points - Category A)
You can claim points for any of the following (if not already used as a Primary Document):
- Birth certificate
- Birth card (issued by Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages)
- Citizenship certificate
- Visa granted (Australia)
- Medicare card
Also, 40 points (must contain a photograph and name):
- License or permit issued by the Commonwealth, State, or Territory government (e.g., boat license)
- Identification card issued to a public employee
- Government-issued identification card for financial benefits
- Other official identity documents similar to a passport (e.g., diplomatic documents, some refugee documents)
- Expired passport (not cancelled, current within the last 2 years)
Also 40 points (requires verification):
- Document from an Authorised Deposit-Taking Institution (ADI), bank, building society, credit union, or registered corporation where you are a known customer (at least 12 months).
- Written reference from specific institutions verifying your name (signed by referee and you, known for 12+ months). See AUSTRAC Guideline No. 3 / Information Circular No. 3 for details on acceptable referees.
Secondary Documents (30 Points - Category B)
You can claim points for documents showing your name and address, such as:
- Australian Electoral Commission electoral roll record
- Financial institution records
- Records held under law (excluding land titles)
- Lease/rent agreement
- Rent receipt from a licensed real estate agent
- Council Rates Notice
Secondary Documents (10 Points - Category C)
You can claim points for documents showing:

Name and address:
- Public utility record (phone, water, gas, electricity bill)

Name and signature:
- Marriage certificate (for maiden name only)
- Foreign driver's licence
- Membership card for a registered club
- NRMA membership card
- EFTPOS card

Name and date of birth:
- Record from a primary, secondary, or tertiary educational institution (attended within the last 10 years)
- Record from a professional or trade association membership
Privacy and Security
Snug prioritises member privacy and security:
- Adheres to Australian Privacy Principles (Privacy Act 1998) and GDPR where applicable. See Snug’s Privacy Policy for details.
- Uses fully encrypted, bank-level 256-bit security.
- Your data is not sold or shared outside Snug without consent.
