This article explains how to choose the right employment status when completing your Snug rental application, particularly if you are self-employed or receiving a pension.
Overview
Some property managers require applicants to upload payslips as part of their rental application. This requirement only applies to applicants who select "Employed" as their employment status. If you are self-employed, a pensioner, or otherwise not in traditional paid employment, selecting "Other" will prevent the system from asking you for payslips.
Understanding employment status options
When you reach the Employment History section of your Snug profile, you'll be asked to select your current employment status. The three options are:
Status | When to use |
Employed | You are currently in salaried or waged employment (full-time, part-time, or casual) and can provide payslips. |
Retired | You are retired from the workforce. |
Other | You are self-employed, a contractor, receiving a pension, on government benefits, a student, or otherwise not in traditional paid employment. |

Step 1: Go to your Employment History
- Log in to your Snug account at app.snug.com.
- Navigate to My Profile from your dashboard.
- Select the Employment section.
Step 2: Select your employment status
- If you are self-employed or a contractor: Select "Other". You can still add your employment details and income information, but you will not be asked to upload payslips.
- If you are receiving a pension or government benefits: Select "Other".
- If you are in salaried or waged employment: Select "Employed". You may be asked to upload payslips if the property manager requires them.
Step 3: Complete your employment details
After selecting your status, add your employment or income details as prompted. If you selected "Other", you can still provide:
- Your business or income source details
- Gross annual income
- Supporting documents such as tax returns, an accountant letter, or bank statements (instead of payslips)
Common Questions
Q: I'm self-employed but I selected "Employed" and now it's asking for payslips. What do I do?
A: Go back to your Employment History section, change your employment status to "Other", and then return to your application. The payslip requirement will no longer apply.
Q: Will selecting "Other" hurt my application?
A: No. Property managers can see your full income and employment details regardless of which status you select. Choosing the correct status simply ensures you're asked for the right documents.
Q: I'm a pensioner with a part-time job. What should I select?
A: If you can provide payslips from your part-time job, select "Employed". If your primary income is your pension and you cannot provide payslips, select "Other".
